Australian South Sea Islander Recognition Day

Today is Australian South Sea Islander Recognition Day. On this day in 1994 the Australian South Sea Island Community were formally recognised by the Federal Government as a ‘distinct cultural group’. We remember the over 60,000 Islanders who were blackbirded from over 80 Pacific Islands during a period of four decades from 1863–1904. The Australian South Sea Islanders community continues to prevail and thrive today.
